Wool Rugs

Wool rugs, including Karakul, Mohair, Merino, Alpaca, and New Zealand wool varieties, require special care to maintain their beauty and longevity.

Vacuum Regularly

The best way to care for your wool rug is to vacuum it regularly using a vacuum cleaner with good suction and a flat head attachment without the brush bristles. It’s normal for a quality wool rug to shed during the first few weeks, but this will settle over time. We recommend vacuuming your rug twice a week for the first month, and then once a week thereafter. If needed, gently rake a cut-pile rug with a hand rake to lift and restore the fibres to their original shape and condition.

Handle Loose Fibres with Care

Do not pull at any loose ends. Instead, push them back or carefully trim loose fibres with scissors. It’s common for fibres to pop up from a brand-new rug. Reposition your rug in different areas of your space periodically to distribute wear evenly and to prevent discoloration from sunlight.

Address Spills Immediately

If you experience a spill, act quickly. Avoid rubbing the spill. Instead, use a spatula or the edge of a credit card to gently scrape away the excess. Immediately blot the area with a clean cloth, working from the outside edges toward the centre of the stain to prevent it from spreading. Continue blotting until the area is dry.

Stain Removal

To remove a stain, soak a cloth in a mixture of mild soap or rug shampoo, lukewarm water, and a teaspoon of distilled white vinegar. Blot the stain gently, then dilute the area with clean water and blot again. Always test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not damage the rug's colour. Remove any soapy residue by rinsing the area with clean water and blotting dry. Make sure both sides of the rug are completely dry.

Minimise Wear & Tear

If you place furniture on your rug, try to move it every one or two months to prevent dents. Rotate and reverse your rug every six months to ensure even wear. Avoid exposing your wool rug to direct sunlight, as this can cause the colours to fade over time.

Washing

Handwoven wool rugs generally require a full wash once every five to ten years. We recommend professional cleaning.

Silk

Our silk rugs are meticulously crafted by skilled artisans in India & Africa for Living Well Interiors

Regular Cleaning

Silk is a delicate material, so it's important to clean your rug regularly to maintain its appearance and to help extend the time between professional cleanings. Gently vacuum the rug using a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and dirt. Avoid beater bars or rollers that could damage the delicate fibers. Sweep with a gentle broom if needed.

Stain and Spillages

Use immediate action should you experience a spill on your Silk rug. Avoid applying the solution directly onto the rug; instead, dampen a clean dry cloth with the solution and gently blot the stain. Do not rub the spill, as this can spread the stain and damage the fibers. If necessary, use a solution of water mixed with a mild detergent to gently clean the affected area.

Rug Placement

Silk rugs are best suited for low-traffic spaces to minimize wear and tear. To prevent fading, place your rug in an area where it won't be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. Place furniture with caution to avoid crushing the fibers. Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent abrasion.

Professional Cleaning

We advise having your rug cleaned by a professional experienced in silk rug care. Silk rugs should not be washed in a machine or exposed to steam cleaning, hot water, or excessive moisture.

Washing and Drying

If washing the rug yourself, use a bucket to mix a mild detergent with water. Gently agitate the solution, then lightly sponge the rug. Avoid soaking or using hot water. Ensure the rug is rinsed thoroughly and gently shaken from the corners to remove excess water. Do not bleach, tumble dry, or use a washing machine for your silk rug. Silk should be dry cleaned only. fI your rug has fringes, clean them manually using a gentle approach. Avoid harsh brushing.

Specific Care Tips

Do not use enzymatic cleaners, chlorine bleach, or any products that contain strong chemicals. These can d a m a g e the fibers and the natural dyes of the rug. If needed, iron your rug on a low setting using a pressing cloth to protect the surface. For any further questions or assistance, please contact us.

Jute & Sisal Rugs

Jute and Sisal rugs are natural fibre rugs that require specific care to maintain their durability and appearance.

Vacuum Regularly

Regular vacuuming with a flat head attachment that has strong suction is all that is needed for daily care of Jute and Sisal rugs. For a deeper clean, take your rug outside and shake it thoroughly before vacuuming. This frequent and regular vacuuming will increase the rug’s life by preventing soil build-up. We recommend lifting the corners and vacuuming underneath the
rug every few weeks to mitigate dust build-up. Always follow the binding of the rug when vacuuming.

Avoid Water

We do not recommend using water on Sisal or Jute rugs as they can shrink, discolour, or stain when wet. Avoid using rug shampooers, steam cleaners, or any method that involves water saturation on natural fibre rugs like Jute and Sisal.

Address Spills Immediately

If you experience a spill on your rug, act quickly. Do not rub the spill. Use a nail file or the corner of a credit card to carefully scrape away any spillage or solids. Immediately blot the area with a clean cloth, working from the outside edges toward the centre of the stain to prevent it from spreading. Continue blotting until the area is dry.

Stain Removal

To remove a stain, mix six parts lukewarm water to one part mild soap or rug shampoo, along with a teaspoon of distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the rug to check for discoloration. If there is no discoloration, spray the solution onto the stain and use a soft brush to work the detergent into the fibres. Wait ten minutes, then blot the area with a dry cloth. Ensure both sides of the rug are completely dry by laying it flat on an even surface. While we recommend
professional cleaning every one to two years, these steps can be followed for occasional DIY cleaning.

Minimise Wear & Tear

Rotate and reverse your rug every six months to ensure even wear. Avoid placing the rug in direct sunlight, as this can cause the fibres to fade over time. For homes with hardwood floors, we recommend adding a non-slip pad to the underside of your rug to prevent slipping and provide additional protection.
